"The name of our paper was chosen by two very active members of the Beatrice PACERS program, Mr. Freddie Howard and Mr. Edwin Moorer. We then asked Natorio Howard, a 1999 graduate of Shields, to design the flag for The Beatrice Legacy. Our focus is on happenings, businesses, and people in our community. Interest has come from so many people from out of town. The Legacy has not gone unnoticed. We have subscriptions from people who never attended Shields, but who are proud supporters of ours, people from as far away as Mobile, New York, and even Washington, D.C."  – Mary Howard
