The PACERS Story

PACERS, a 501(c)(3) organization, has formed community-building partnerships with small rural Alabama schools and communities for more than three decades. Their common projects have included student-published community newspapers, school and community gardens, home and greenhouse construction, collections of student writing, building and operating aquaculture units, and photography.

The PRCNN – PACERS Rural Community Newspaper Network – is the organization's current program, through which community members in Camp Hill, Packers Bend, Beatrice, and Pintlala publish model, professional-quality newspapers. PRCNN publications are archived by the Alabama Department of Archives and History, a process that underscores their value and quality. They serve resident and non-resident community members.

The PACERS Mission

PACERS Chapters have been organized in rural Alabama communities to support and extend PACERS projects and to provide communities with unique contexts for planning and implementing valuable programs. Chapters and their members have built passive solar greenhouses, started community/school gardens, installed and assisted with aquaculture units, contributed to students’ efforts in local documentation, and supported the work of students and teachers.
